A Black Box That Holds Light
The Hong Kong International Spring Lighting Fair recently opened at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Invited by KClighting to design its stand, E Studio gave the brand an upgraded exhibition image that conveys its minimalist attitude.
1B-C02 / 6 × 6 m
A black box that holds light lands at stand 1B-C02. Measuring 6 by 6 metres, it reveals the essence of light through the purest space and material, waiting to be opened.
"Along the boundary between light and darkness, architecture is clearly expressed, takes on its own form and reveals its relationships, held in infinite connection." — Tadao Ando
Graphics
Light is a pure natural element: a substance that can be observed, and a phenomenon that can be sensed and experienced. Within a small 6 × 6 m volume, the stand makes a sculptural, symbolic impression. A restrained geometry holds a rich lighting experience and every function of the stand, and oblique cuts and peeled-away surfaces open space within the cube for light to inhabit.
Strong contrasts of light and shade heighten the geometry and tension of the space. Darkness envelops the light, and different methods and techniques show the many things light can do.
Module
The aim was a stand that balances design and experience in every respect, giving every visitor a strong visual impact and a new spatial experience.
Because a fair is temporary and the venue has strict rules on materials and fire safety, the key to the project was balancing the design idea with what could actually be built. Stretched membrane replaced latex paint to solve on-site schedule and quality-control problems, and the whole structure was prefabricated in modules by a mainland manufacturer, test-assembled, dismantled and shipped to Hong Kong for rapid installation.
Excellent products never lack admirers, and great brands never lack excellent products.
Communicate
At the fair, crowds poured in and ideas converged in conversation about design.
KClighting drew the attention of many buyers from around the world, who came to learn about its products and smart lighting solutions and expressed interest in working together, opening new opportunities for the brand's international growth.
Cooperation
For three years E Studio and KClighting have kept up a long-term strategic partnership, building the brand across every front, from identity and showrooms to the corporate headquarters and trade fairs. Continually generating new ideas and refining the brand, it is a new experiment in integrated, end-to-end design for a company.
